Moving Up in Stakes
For any player who plays online poker for an extended period of time, moving up the stakes is a natural progression. In fact, moving up in the stakes should be a goal of any poker player. When you finally make the jump to a higher level of stakes, it is important to understand what you will experience with the transition. There are a number of things to expect when moving up stakes in online poker games and if you do not know what to expect, you can be in for a tragic experience.
The first thing that you can expect when moving up stakes in your poker play is a better level of competition. By the very nature of the fact that they are playing for more money, the players who are sitting down at the table are almost certainly going to be better than the players with whom you were playing before. These players have already moved up the stakes from the level you were playing at. As such, it is important to understand that you are probably a weaker player in comparison to the players with whom you were previous playing.
Another thing to expect and understand is that your bankroll is not going to be as deep as it was before. With the increase in stakes, the relative depth of your bankroll is going to decrease. For example, if you are moving up from a $.50/$1 staked game to a $1/$2 staked game, the size of your bankroll in comparison to the size of the blinds is going to be cut in half. This is an extremely important thing to remember, as you could easily burn through your bankroll if you are not careful, either knocking yourself back down to a lower stake or completely blowing up your bankroll.
Finally, you need to let yourself adjust to the change in play. When you move up the stakes the game is going to feel different from the game that you were playing before. This is completely normal and you should take things slow in the beginning to adjust to the different play. For example, some things that you could get away with before may no longer work against the higher caliber players with whom you are playing. Additionally, you should try to learn as much as you can while you avoid taking any great risks that could push you back down in stakes. Being knocked down a level in the stakes is a very depressing feeling and can shake the confidence of any poker player.
Overall, moving up in the stakes in online poker is a wonderful experience, but one that should be approached with caution and respect. With the increased stakes come increased risk and a better quality opponent that you are not normally used to. As such, when you first move up in the stakes you should take it slow and give yourself time to adjust.
